Focus: exploration as play

When Selvacrawling, I roll on the focus table:

table – focus

d10

focus

1

Selva Lugana

2

The waters of the lake

3

Myself

4

Refuges

5

A pirate of la Baronessa’s crew

6

la Baronessa

7

An item in my possession

8

A tale that was told to me

9

The winds

10

The wild

By rolling on the focus table, I can delve into various facets of the reality around me. While my quest to find 'La Baronessa' remains a central thread, the world surrounding me in the reed bed of Selva Lugana is rich with interconnected elements that would exist regardless of me, Bastiano.

Picture this: as I traverse the reed bed, an intricate tapestry of influences comes into play. The winds engage in a game of balances, whisper their secrets and like to be capricious; the dense Selva Lugana pulsates with life and its own ecosystem; I, Bastiano, bring my own motivations to the story, and hold items that somehow i got. Refuges offer glimpses of rest to my tired body, while the tranquil waters of the lake mirror both serenity and danger. The cursed pirates lurk, intertwined with the enigmatic presence of 'La Baronessa.' ; let's not forget that my character is also part of the society in which the story takes place, so I have heard a few tales around this place before eventually coming here.

The Selva Lugana stops being about one thing, and starts becoming to be the result of complex interactions.

When I roll on the focus table during gameplay, I automatically know that by the end of the scene I will have explored a little bit of this or that aspect of this complex system.

procedure – focus

  1. If a Selvacrawling d10 roll results in a 4 or higher, roll on the focus table
  2. The scene will be pertaining that focus.
  3. Roll on the focus specific table
  4. Play the scene

A ta(b)le of winds

Adventure has become a habit from which I can't abstain.

Before the road outside becomes congested with buses, cars, assorted humanity and responsibilities™, there exists a moment when birdsong fills the air, coffee is prepared and my cat melts on the kitchen rug. It is at this juncture that the dice must be cast, heralding the start of a new quest.

The winds that blow and flow over the Selva Lugana, the setting hosting my playthroughs as Bastiano, are yes natural phenomena, but also possess the ability to shape reality.

The winds hold sway over the lives of those inhabiting the towns and surroundings of the Lake. (Note: the Lake, too, has power over the ecosystem developed around it, but in different ways that will be explored). They are both respected and feared, believed to possess powers that can either bless or curse the endeavors of those who dwell around the waters, who exist here at the Lake. Relationships with the winds are forged and tested, with individuals seeking favor or attempting to appease them in their pursuits.

It is within this balance that the story of Bastiano unfolds, guided by the caprice of air.
